Pets R.I.P – Top Tips to Keep Your Pets Cool this Summer

Summer is hot! We all know that, but it’s easier for us to be able to crank up the A/C, jump in the pool or just take a cool shower. For our pets, it’s a whole other story!

Did you know that dogs can suffer heat stroke and it can be fatal within minutes? Cats can also suffer from heat stress, and both of these conditions can be severely debilitating to your pets, and can cause long-lasting damage. Unlike humans, dogs and cats don’t sweat to keep themselves cool, at least not in the way you might think.

Since the animals are covered in fur, pets don’t sweat through it but they do keep themselves cool through a small amount of sweat glands located in the pads of their paws. The surface area of those pads is, as you know, rather small, making regulating their temperature quite difficult. Dogs will pant to release excess heat from their bodies as it allows evaporation of heat from the mouth. Cats will stretch out their bodies and lay in the shade, as the smarter of the two animals (arguably!). However, cats can also pant, but it’s something that’s not considered to be normal and is a sign that your cat is in danger.

With dogs, if they are experiencing heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, vomiting or diarrhoea, they may be suffering from heat stroke, so get them to a vet right away!

Keeping Your Pets Cool

Cat owners actually don’t need to worry too much about their little feline friends because they tend not to overexert themselves if it's too hot. What you can do though, just to give them a helping hand, is leave the air conditioning running. Cats will likely stretch out and find a cool place to lie anyway. If they don’t, use something like a cardboard box in a dark, cool spot for your cat to head to in the hot weather. Make sure there is a lot of cool water too.

For dogs, damp towels are absolute magic! You can even get your dog a cooling mat, something that has a gel-like substance inside it that can be popped in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes. Dogs also love to play in the water, unlike cats, so having a sprinkler or a paddling pool can be great ways to have fun, but also keep them cool.

Of course, you should never leave your dogs or cats in cars, no matter what the weather is, or even if it’s parked in the shade. And always remember, keep your pets hydrated with enough fresh and cool water as possible.
